Aldonia H. Flowers

Aldonia Hadley Flowers Mrs. Aldonia Hadley Flowers, 90 years old, passed away on Thursday, May 19, 2011. She was born in Cairo, Georgia to Herbert Garret and Beatrice Butler Hadley in 1920. She grew up in Palmetto, Florida and graduated from Lincoln High School there. Her Mother died when she was four years old and an older brother, Willie James, and a younger sister, Ethel Mae, died in the typhoid fever epidemic before she was six. She was preceded in death by her late husband, William Doby Flowers, Sr. and her fifth child, William Doby Flowers, Jr. They raised and educated six children in Tallahassee, Fl. Her surviving children are: Altha Flowers Manning, Alwillie Hampton Speights (Charles), Fred Herbert Flowers (Loretta), Doby Lee Flowers, and Ralph Flowers (Barbara). She has 12 grandchildren and 14 great grand children. Her children, grands and greatgrands were the joy of her life. She had many cousins, nieces and nephews to whom she was very close and an abundance of friends both young and old, several of which she called her children. She and her first cousin Gladys Crawford of Miami are among the few Hadleys left in their generation. She called a dear childhood friend, Naomi Bivens of Bradenton, Florida, her sister. They remained close until her death. Mrs. Flowers was a community and civil rights activist and worked tirelessly with the Rev. C.K. Steele and her dear friend Christine Knowles to integrate the schools of Leon County. She taught in the Leon County Schools for many years at the original Lincoln High School and later at Lively Vocational Technical School. This transition too was a civil rights issue as she had to force the issue of assignment to a school following the closing of the original Lincoln High School. She also was one of the leaders that following the closing of the original Lincoln High School insisted that the next high school built be named Lincoln High School. She was a member of the Capital City Garden Clubs, The Miccosukee Sword Swallowers Bible Study Group, the NAACP, and several other organizations. She took great pride in her church, Bethel Baptist Missionary Church and her ministers, Rev. C.K. Steele, Rev. Alexander and the current minister, Rev. R. B. Holmes whom she loved and considered as one of her sons. The family requests that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to the "Mrs. Aldonia Hadley Flowers Endowed Scholarship Fund" at Florida A & M University. Betty Jane Crittenden Brownlee

BROWNLEE, Betty Jane Crittenden In Loving Memory 1-13-1929/5-19-2011 We celebrate the life of Betty Jane Crittenden Brownlee, whom Jesus called home on May 19, 2011. Born Jan. 13, 1929, in Struthers, OH, Betty was the daughter of Lester Crittenden and Ester Blakeslee Crittenden. Betty attended Struthers High School, and worked as a comptometer operator (the first commercial key-driven mechanical calculator) in Strauss's Department Store. She married Merrel Frank "Curley" Brownlee, Jr., often saying, "From the minute I laid eyes on him, I knew he was the one for me." They celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary April 6, 2011. Betty worked part-time as a hairstylist while raising her family in Struthers. She liked spending summers in lakeside campgrounds, where she relished the time with family and friends, participating in card games, Bingo, campfires, hall dances, potluck dinners, Christmas in July, and watching children play on hayrides. She and husband Frank camped every year with their children, and later their grandchildren. During winter, family camping began in Palm Harbor, with summers in Salem, OH. Betty and Frank moved permanently to Hudson, in 1997. Betty enjoyed various activities at her community clubhouse in Florida. She lived the art of giving from the heart, often cooking meals and sending them to ill neighbors. Happy moments were watching reruns of "Three's Company" and she ended her nights with laughter while watching "The Golden Girls." A woman of faith, she loved the Lord and attended The Church of God. Living in appreciation of everything in life, one would often hear her say, "I'm so lucky." Truly an inspiration to all who knew her, Betty's greatest gift to the world was her love and compassion for others. Acknowledged as God's greatest blessing to her family, Betty bestowed a lifetime of joy, humor, selflessness, and love without restrictions. He is survived by his loving wife, Muriel, his adoring sister, Thelma, two children; Claudia Kirschner Laurence and Jay Kirschner, fourteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Born on August 1, 1917, he survived the Great Depression, then served his country honorably and with distinction in, while in the U.S. Army Air Corps; Asian theater. Following the war, Sam eschewed the opportunities afforded by the G.I. bill and instead began working and raising a family, which he also did with honor and distinction. ??Good Neighbor Sam?? was a multi-talented, hard working, successful entrepreneur, who cherished family above all else. Though not college educated, many assumed he was, due to his voracious dedication to amassing knowledge about a vast, eclectic array of topics. Sam was highly intelligent, progressive, and fascinated by world history and politics, and attempted to instill those qualities in his children, his many friends, and anyone else who would listen. Never loathe to venture an opinion on any subject, he loved the intellectual give and take of spirited debate with friends. A dinner discussion with Sam might include subjects as diverse as international, national and local politics, the current state of the Theater, and the underpinnings leading to the Spanish Civil War. Sam was a talented arborist and craftsman. He could build, grow, maintain and fix just about anything. He also was artistically talented; a thespian most well known for his participation in the Hollywood Little Theater Company, and a sculptor. He generated unique and beautiful work on the potter??s wheel as well. Perhaps his most defining characteristic was his sense and love of humor. He believed in his soul that the curative power of laughter was unlimited. And with humor, Sam practiced what he preached. He loved to make those around him laugh - and they inevitably did. Rest well and peacefully, Sam. Your family and friends will never forget the joy and adventure you brought to their lives.

Verna Almira Corry

CORRY, VERNA ALMIRA, 90, Ocala - She once said she would never go anywhere without an invitation, but Verna Almira Corry, 90, was invited to the next life, and gracefully accepted in the early hours of the morning of May 6, 2011. She was born in Canada on June 25, 1920 to Myrtle and Norman Fenby, the third of four children. As a young woman, she moved to Dayton, Ohio, and worked at Wright Patterson Air Force Base where she met her future husband, William Adair Corry, whom she married on November 27, 1944 following a brief engagement. She was proudly naturalized as an American citizen on December 24, 1946, and spent the next four decades in Toledo, Ohio raising her family. She moved to Florida in 1986. Her lively character captivated generations of friends, family, neighbors, children and grandchildren. She had charisma, flair and an unwavering sense of style, gravitating always toward the brightest of colors, glitteriest of embellishments and the flashiest of flowers. Verna loved a lively party, basking in the sun, a great garage sale, a winning hand of bridge, true life murder mysteries and anything on sale. In true character, she fought with an unflagging intensity for life and independence right through her very last days on this earth. She lives on through her children: Grier and Rick (Michelle) Corry; her grandchildren: Eric, Zack, Michael, Doug, Emily, Danielle and Kyle; her great-grandchildren: Emily, Tommy, Anna, Adam, Anderson and Jenna; her dear adopted family: Sam, Phil, Reagan and Austie Matthews; and her special friends: Mary, David and Natalie. She was preceded in death by her first-born son, John Adair Corry and the two great loves of her life: her husband Bill Corry and dear friend and partner, John Toole. As was her wish, Verna's ashes will be laid to rest in the clear, gentle waters of Lake Hamilton and Lake Michigan in non-traditional ceremonies. A private celebration of Verna's life was held on May 11, 2011 at the home of friends. "Today, the light shines like the sun through her skin and when we ask what she did with her life, we will remember a thousand moments with a smile and will proudly say 'she was one of us.'"
