Kathleen Henderson (In Memoriam)

In Loving Memory of Kathleen Price Henderson Nine years ago, April 16, 2002, beloved wife, mother, sister and daughter Kathy Henderson went to be with her Lord. This memoriam is for her many family members, friends and loved ones, and for praise for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She remains with us by virtue of a wonderful legacy of family members and friends who experienced her unconditional love and kindness, and a life that demonstrated her passion for her Christian faith. This is summarized by one of her favorite biblical passages: Isaiah 41:10 "Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." Kathy lived her Christian faith with quiet patience and courage, and she wanted others to have the very best life possible. For her friends and family members, her love was unconditional and knew no bounds. It has been said that times of tribulation generate defining moments in life from which a person's inner character is made visible to others. We had a gift from our Lord to allow us to see manifested in Kathy's life an innermost peace and faith which can only come from God's Holy Spirit. Our family will always be deeply touched by the love of Kathy's many friends. We knew before her death that God could heal her, and we continue to know that our God is all-powerful and His will shall be done. The fact that God's will doesn't always coincide with our requests doesn't in any fashion alter His absolute love for each of us. We know that Kathy is not dead; she truly is with her Creator, and merely passed from this life to a more real and lasting life above with our Lord. The word "eulogy" is from the Greek word for "praise," and many of Kathy's traits are worthy of praise. However, the praise from our lips shall be forever directed to our Lord for His love and gift of eternal salvation.

Leonard Erickson

ERICKSON, Leonard W., 91, passed away in Zephyrhills, Fla., May 3, 2011. He was born June 1, 1919, the eldest son of William and Pearl (Rueg-segger) Erickson, on the family homestead off Hohnke Road in Cleveland Township, Mich. His family name is among those of the first settlers of Leelanau County, Mich. The family rejoices that he knew Christ, and he has ascended into heaven. He was preceded in death by his brothers, John and Jerry, and sisters, Gladys and Violet. He is survived by his wife, Mary C. (Nelson) Erickson; son, Ronald L. Erickson of Zephyrhills; and his grandchildren, Deborah (Mark) Overstreet of Lakeland, Fla., Tony (Suzanne) Erickson of Simla, Colo., and Pauline (Glenn) Martin of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Marie (Robert) Lemmer of Traverse City, Mich.; sister-in-law, Beattie Erickson of Apache Junction, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews. He was the family's prologue, their inherited legacy. Mr. Erickson came from a generation in which men were truly men. He was the early family hero after saving the family homestead. A hero of the true kind, backed by a family name, character, honesty and a handshake. He came from an era in which right was might and there was little talk about the shades of gray. Mr. Erickson loved Belgian horses, and at the ripe age of seven, he could hold back nearly two tons of horses for hours on end, working in the fields. He was from the "old country" and "simpler times" as he referred to them. In his early days, he was hired to skid logs with a team of horses. He was a God-inspired man who lived during the depression years and literally rubbed small change wages to become a man with no debt. Later he owned his own cherry and beef cattle farming operation off of Donner Road. In addition, he owned a trucking company. He bought and transported livestock for locals to include involvement with area 4-H Clubs. He hauled fruit for area packing companies. He was a buyer known as "Number 10" for a beef packer in Escanaba, Mich. He pulled horses in contests, and he traded them, too. Mr. Erickson was a teamster like no other; a gentleman in competition. As the weights grew heavier with few teams remaining, it was a rare day that he went back for the third pull; even if the contest championship was on the line. The favor of the horses was always more important than the win. He served as his family's inspiration for being forthright and living life the right way. He was deep in his convictions, and he stood on principal and his unwavering belief in God, family and country. Memorial services will take place at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at Whitfield Funeral Home in Zephyrhills, Fla. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in behalf of Leonard W. Erickson go to the Michigan Horse Pulling Association Inc., 9529 Glovers Lake Road, Bear Lake, MI 49614.

Mr. John Lott Brown (Featured)

The University of South Florida's third president and the one credited with setting it on a path to research prominence, John Lott Brown, has died. He was 86. Brown came to USF in 1978 from the University of Rochester, in New York, where he directed the Center for Visual Science. As an engineer, he focused on promoting USF's professional schools - engineering, business and medicine. "He represented the era when USF fundamentally changed from being a small liberal arts college to a research university," said USF marketing vice president Michael Hoad, who as a reporter at the Tampa Tribune covered Lott's tenure at USF. During Brown's 10 years as president, USF experienced extraordinary growth. Its budget more than doubled to $250 million as its enrollment grew to 29,500 students, making USF the second largest public university in Florida. USF research grants grew from about $10 million to $23 million under Lott, helping him fend off attempts to designate only the University of Florida and Florida State as the state's primary universities. Betty Castor, a USF president from 1993 to 1999, called Brown "a visionary." He established regional branches in Lakeland and Fort Myers, and he attracted researchers, scientists and doctoral students to the university, she said. "He played a crucial role in the academic expansion, especially the medical expansion," Castor said. "He really wanted to build the academic program," Castor said. "Now USF is a research giant." His focus on research angered some faculty members who said it came at the expense of liberal arts teaching. Critics also complained that with his research push, USF grew too fast, particularly the medical school. Toward the end of his tenure, the school had become financially insolvent because of lax internal administration. But Brown installed new management before he announced his resignation in 1987. Brown's boss at the time, University System Chancellor Charlie Reed, said that USF under Brown was "one of American higher education's great 20th Century success stories." After resigning, Brown became a professor in the engineering school, spending many of his evenings dancing with his wife Katie at Librero's School and Dance Club on Davis Islands. He also water skied and scuba dove. The couple left Tampa in 1994 when Brown was asked to become interim president of his alma mater, Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts. Brown had entered WPI in 1946 as part of the U.S. Navy's V-12 college training program. He then earned a master's degree in psychology from Temple University in Philadelphia, and a Ph.D. from Columbia University in New York. He served on the faculties of the University of Pennsylvania and Kansas State University, where he did research on the physiology of the visual system. He loved the study of the eye and how the brain perceived images, Hoad said. "He was very much the engineer, the guy who was detailed and precise. He loved the precision of research." He is survived by his wife, four children and six grandchildren.

She loved sports, including Yankee baseball, Buccaneer football and even wrestling. She could call up stats about any player like a sportscaster and, many a day, had screaming matches with the game she was watching and how the players were playing and always had a comment on the inability of the coaches to do the correct placement of players and plays. Family gatherings always included poker with her siblings and brothers-in-law, and best of all, a platter of the best natilla (Spanish custard) in the city. She went peacefully and without pain and for that the family thanks all involved nurses and doctors in emergency services and the critical care unit, and for the inpatient care she received until her last day at St. Joseph's Hospital. A celebration of her long life will take place 10-11 a.m. Monday, May 16, at Boza & Roel Funeral Home, 4730 N. Armenia Ave., Tampa. Interment will follow at Myrtle Hill Memorial Park.
