SEXTON, Crowell E., died Monday, September 27, 2010, at his home in Waynesville, N.C. He was born October 6, 1915, in Tampa, the son of Ormond Griffith Sexton and Stella Crowell Sexton. He had many fond memories of growing up in Tampa and was very proud to be an Eagle Scout. During World War II, he served with the U. S. Navy in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean theaters on the destroyer escort U.S.S. Pride. Thereafter for thirty years, he pursued a career in sales and management with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, holding positions in Tampa, Miami, Fla., Arlington, Va., Washington, D.C., New York, Ft. Myers Fla., and Jacksonville, Fla., where he retired. He held CLU and AM diplomas from The American College of Life Underwriters and taught CLU courses at Edison Community College. He served as president of the General Agents and Managers Association of Florida; president of the Florida Estate Planning Council; and president of Family Consultation Services of Jacksonville. In Jacksonville, he worked with the Laymen's Association of St. Mark's Episcopal Church; was an honorary life member of Timuquana Country Club, and was an accomplished golfer and tennis player. After retiring in 1970, he followed his interest in travel, sports, and the arts. He wrote an art history book, The Girls of Montmartre, which was published privately by his two sons to honor the 60th wedding anniversary of their parents. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Alice Porter Sexton; two sons, Crowell Anthony Sexton, J.D. and wife, Linda of Waynesville, N.C. and Porter William Sexton, Ph.D., of Hayward, Calif.; three grandsons, George Crowell Sexton of Ashland, Ore.; Nicholas Crowell Sexton and Michael George Sexton of Tampa; granddaughter, Porter Sexton Cusmano and husband, Phil; and great-grandson, Samuel Nelson Cusmano of Tampa. DEBBIE SHEFFIELD, MATHIS, 50, GRANITE QUARRY, N.C. - Deborah Ann Sheffield Mathis, 50, of Granite Quarry died June 4, 2011 in Rowan Regional Medical Center from cancer. She was the wife of Joe Frank Mathis and the mother of Jared Steele Mathis, Kristen Renee Mathis and Matthew James Blake Mathis, all of the home., A native of Glendale, CA, Debbie was born Aug. 24, 1960. She grew up in California, Florida and North Carolina. Early in life, she dedicated herself to helping others, and as a teenager worked at the Brian Center in Salisbury. She graduated from East Rowan High School in 1978 and in 1982 received a B.S. degree in business administration from Catawba College. She completed post graduate work at Duke University and was licensed by the North Carolina Nursing Home Administration. She served as administrator of Autumn Care in Salisbury when it first opened and later returned to the Brian Center, where she was administrator for several years. In 2000 she became administrator of the North Carolina Lutheran Home in Salisbury. In 2006, she was named chief operations officer for Lutheran Services for The Aging, Inc., A member of Shiloh United Methodist Church, Debbie served as chair of Outreach, working with all Outreach programs, especially One Church, One Child and Angel Tree. She also served as acolyte trainer and was active in the United Methodist Women. At Granite Quarry School, she was an avid supporter of the Back Pack program., Debbie had four great loves. She loved the Lord, she loved her family, she loved her job and serving others --and she loved to be in the mountains with those she loved. A highlight of her life came last September when she and Joe Frank made a trip to Alaska, where they interrupted their Inland Passage cruise for a 1200-mile highway excursion by automobile., Surviving in addition to her husband and children are her parents, Russ and Irene Morin Sheffield of Auburndale, FL, and a brother, John Russell Sheffield of Altamonte Springs, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Myra Mathis Rand of Mount Ulla; and a brother-in-law, Elliott Mathis of Granite Quarry. Debbie was the daughter-in-law of the late James and Mary Ida Steele Mathis of Granite Quarry. She and Joe Frank were married on Oct. 17, 1992., Following internment, a memorial service is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 7, in Shiloh United Methodist Church with Pastor H. T. He graduated from Miami Sr. High, joined the, where he served as a Master Sergeant with the occupied forces in Japan after, . He attended the University of Miami then the, , where he graduated with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering in 1955. In 1952 he married Elizabeth Selfridge of Lakeville, CT. After college he worked for the Dupont Corp. in NJ. During his 16 years in NJ, he was chairman of the both Marlboro Citizen's Committee and the Planning Board. He played an instrumental role in creating change in local government, zoning laws, and protecting the Burnt Fly Bog wetlands. After moving to Homestead, FL in 1974, he became very active in local, state and national political campaigns, serving with his wife on the Miami-Dade Republican Executive Committee. He also served as chairman of the Homestead-Redlands Republican Club. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth, son Jeffrey, daughters Deborah, Lisa and Jenifer and his sister Christine Spinks. He has 9 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son Gerald Bauman III and his sisters Nancy and Betsy. KREPCIO, Joseph Albert Sr. The Lord whispered the name, Joseph Albert Krepcio, Sr., 91, of St. Petersburg, who went peacefully into his arms on May 13, 2011, at Bay Pines Veteran's Hospital, Hospice Unit. He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Helen Czerwinski Krepcio and son Joseph Albert Krepcio, Jr. Born in Hartford, CT on April 23, 1920, he was the son of Anthony and Anna (Nitkiewicz). Joseph grew up in Hartford and attended Hartford public schools. Once completing High School, he enlisted in the, , where he served aboard Submarine Chaser - 658. After serving 2 years in the Navy, Joseph went to work for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford, CT for 43 years as a Tool & Die Maker. Joseph is survived by his loving daughter, Pamela Puskas of St. Petersburg; his son, Richard Krepcio of Myrtle Beach, SC, and four grandchildren, Jolynne Best and her husband Allen of Glastonbury, CT, Paula Custer and her husband Michael of Land O' Lakes, Joseph Albert Krepcio, III and his fiancee' Christine Cunningham of Windsor, CT, and Stephanie Krepcio of Myrtle Beach, SC. He also leaves his brother, Walter Krepcio and his wife Helen of Wethersfield, CT. Mass will be held at 11 am in the Chapel At Bay Pines on the 5th floor, Ward 5-C on Thursday, June 9, 2011, with burial following at 12:45 pm at the Veterans Administration Bay Pines Cemetery. HARTGROVE, RALPH WOODSON, SR., 90, a former resident of Miami, died June 3 at the Universal Health Care facility in King, NC. Ralph is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Rubye Fowlkes Hartgrove; two sons, Ralph Woodson Junior and his wife Beverly and Jerry Wayne and his wife Barbara; four grandchildren, Tracy, Megan, Lyle and Alan; and four great-grandchildren Carter, Sydney, Vincent, and Rocco; brothers Edgar, Dean, Dennis, and Jimmy; and a sister, Rachel. Ralph served his country with the Navy in the South Atlantic during, . He began his career in federal government service as an employee of the VA after WWII and joined the US Customs Service in 1956. His service took him and Rubye to Wilmington, NC and Miami, FL where he retired in 1980. While in Miami, Ralph and Rubye were members of Wayside Baptist Church. Shawn was born May 6, 1975, in Akron, Ohio, to Carol Dick and Larry Applegarth. Shawn earned his Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering and Master of Science in mechanical engineering, both from the University of South Florida and was a research engineer for the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital, Patient Safety Center - Center of Excellence. Shawn is survived by his wife, Lara; his son, Nicholas Andrew; father, Larry and his wife, Darlene; and mother, Carol Dick of Akron and her husband, Tom. Defino, Theresa "Terry" C., 79 of Hollywood, passed away June 5, 2011. She graduated from Newark State Teachers College in 1953 and worked for several years in New Jersey as a kindergarten and second grade teacher. She and Ralph A. Defino celebrated their golden anniversary in October, 2005. The couple moved to Florida in 1963, where they raised six children. Mrs. Defino became a Physical Therapy Assistant in 1978 and later worked for many years for a local orthopedic surgeon, helping grateful patients recover from illness and injury. Mr. Defino retired from the Broward public school system in 1993 after 32 years of service; his last position was principal of Sheridan Hills Elementary. Mrs. Defino was devoted to her husband, children and grandchildren, and her caring nature, elegance and strength made her an inspiration to each of them. She had many interests, including cooking, gardening, and traveling. She especially loved spending time with her husband, children and her wonderful friends amid the mountains of Georgia, where she reveled in the change in the seasons and found a deep sense of peace. Survived by her husband, Ralph; son Stephen (Ivy); daughters Linda (Corky), Theresa, Kathleen (David), Mary Ellen, and Diane (Andy); sister Jacqueline; grandchildren: Danny, Jonathan, Sofia, Kyle, Carolyn, Chloe, Paul, Julia, Sieta and Annabella. Visitation Wednesday 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. with a Prayer Service Wednesday evening at Landmark Funeral Home.
