Jack Newkirk (In Memoriam)

In Loving Memory Of Jack F. Newkirk Two years have passed without your smile, your laughter and of course, your phone calls to "discuss" Gator football and basketball. Two years without being able to seek your insight to solve our "life problems." Two years without our best friend, our Lunch Bunch coordinator, our Jefferson friends organizer, our decorator, landscaper, contractor, baby-sitter, coach and confidant. We know that you are continuing to share with everyone up there your greatest gift left to us- always thinking how to bring Joy to other people's lives no matter how difficult your own challenges are! Each day without you is just another day for us to practice what you have taught us so well! You have given so much happiness and have left us with a life purpose to honor. We miss you every day!

MAX B. KOGEN

KOGEN, MAX B., 87, of Miami, died Friday, June 10, 2011 at Doctors Hospital, Coral Gables. He was born September 26, 1923 in Brooklyn, New York to Samuel and Rae Cohen. He excelled at Boys' High as the top Latin Scholar in New York City. He spent one year at City College there before proudly serving in the, during, . He was awarded a, for injuries incurred during the Battle of Hurtgen Forest in 1944. After the war Max enrolled at the, to complete his undergraduate studies and law school in 1950. His love for Michigan was legendary. It was there that he met Frances, his wife of 60 years, and there that he served as road manager for his beloved Wolverines football team. Later in life, he would insist that his children learn the lyrics of the Michigan Fight Song, even though he would seldom invite them to watch the games, for fear that they'd "jinx" his team. He remained proud when his granddaughter, Taylor, graduated from his alma mater, and most recently upon learning that another, Arielle, will begin attending in the fall. In 1950, Max moved to Miami with Frances to realize his two greatest legacies: his family and his law career. He is survived by Frances, three daughters, Lauren Ackerman (Mike) of Miami Beach, Kim Scharf (Blair) of Coral Springs, Cary Mitchell (John) of Miramar, and ten grandchildren, John, Joshua, Jenna, Arielle, Lindzi, Taylor, Casey, Katie, Matthew and Patrick. He is also survived by his sister, May Cohen, of Deerfield Beach, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Professionally, Max rose quickly and prominently as an Assistant State Attorney under George Brautigam and Richard Gerstein to become Chief of the Capital Crimes Division. He then began a notable career as a criminal defense attorney, recognized by his peers as a respected and worthy jurist. Subsequently, he and Gerald Kogan became law partners in Kogen and Kogan, P.A. until Mr. Kogan (no relation) joined the judiciary. In 1983 Max accepted his daughter, Lauren, as his partner in Kogen and Kogen, P.A. Later the firm included his youngest daughter, Cary, as well. Upon retirement in 1991, Max threw himself into his only other passion, greyhound dog racing. For many years he bred and raced greyhounds as Kogen's Kennels. His idea of a social night out was dinner at the track. The family extends a special thank you to his caregivers for the last 1 1/2 years, Karlene Knowles and Maryse Joseph. Max will be dearly missed and always loved for the unique individual that he was. No service was held per the family's request. View this Guest Book at www. MiamiHerald.com/obituaries.

Marjorie Taylor*

MARJORIE TAYLOR Marjorie Taylor, also known as Maggie died unexpectedly of a stroke at Trenton,N.J.She was in excellent health prior to this,in fact she was windsurfing just two weeks ago before this tragedy happened. Born at Oceanside Long Island December 26th 1935 she, was the daughter of John and Angie Merrill the youngest of seven children, graduating from New Paltz State University Newburgh N.Y. She taught 4th grade in Long Island for several years. She always had a zest for travel so she applied at the State Department and became an overseas teacher for Armed Forces children in Newfoundland,France and England.Following her return to this country she became upset about discrimination she found in Long Island schools. She resigned her teaching position and was promised a school position in Long Island if she returned. She left and became a Civil Rights worker in Mississippi in 1964 for a full year. This was a very dangerous mission but in spite of this she remained and helped negroes register to vote. She was there when several of the churches she attended were burned to the ground. On return from Mississippi she became concerned about children with autism, attended BU, and received her doctorate in education. She became director of the League School in Boston which was a school that cared for autistic children. She was previously married to Richard Smith who founded Spurwink ,a program to care for troubled and autistic children. Together they developed a wonderful program to help children in need. .She directed and developed several of the teaching programs .The big change in her life began when she developed a passion for windsurfing .She would go on leave from school just to get out on the water in Florida and feel that freedom to go with the wind. Those that don't know it, they just need to know the freedom and escape it holds for Maggie and her husband Bill Taylor. Following her divorce she met her present husband at a Back Cove Portland Maine sailing party. They have had an idyllic marriage, were involved in many windsurf races winning a large number of national races including Canada. Together they worked in three Indian Reservations, and then volunteered in the Dominican Republic several times With the University of Maine Nursing school care for those in need. She is a member of the Unity Church and is a chaplain there. She is an ombudsman in Florida evaluating nursing homes and resolving complaints brought by residents. She is a court appointed mediator in Florida for small claims court settling claims for less then $5000. Her regulator weekly schedule was gym three times a week,Tai Chi twice a week, yoga once, mediation once a week at small claims court, ombudsman several times a month, regularity the swimming pool almost daily in Florida. She was an arvid reader, was a wonderful cook and preferred to eat her tempting recipes with her husband rather than eat out. Her most recent interest is the piano keyboard and was taking lessons weekly. Anyone who knows her loves and appreciates her wonderful caring, positive, attitude and zest for life. She will be sorely missed by all.She was true example for goodness, being open just herself, looking out for others, being interested in everyone in their needs She leaves many nieces and nephews from her six brothers and sisters and leaves six "adopted" children from her marriage from her husband. A memorial service is planned in Maine and in Florida. The service in Maine will be at the Unity Church,154 River Road in Windham with the date to be announced. Tiho Cecic (In Memoriam)

In Loving Memory of Tiho Cecic August 18,1937 - June 16, 2010 Dad??s Poem You never said ??I??m leaving?? You never said ??goodbye?? You were gone before I knew it, and only God knew why. There are no words to tell you just what I feel inside. The Shock, the hurt, the anger might gradually subside. A million times I??ll need you A million times I??ll cry If love alone could have saved you, you never would have died. In life I loved you dearly, In death I love you still. In my heart you hold a place that no one could ever fill. It broke my heart to loose you but you didn??t go alone. For part of me went with you the day God took you home. Things will never be the same and all though it hurts so bad. I will smile whenever I hear your name and be proud you were my dad. I love you Daddy. Mom, Cris, Meenie & Marc, Jordan & Michelle and grandkids.
